Laid by Hand or Paver
Before being applied to the road base, a bitumen primer seal or emulsion tack coat must be used. Depending on the size of the project, the asphalt can then be laid either by hand spreading or through a machine called a paver. This is usually applied to a thickness of around 30mm, or more if required. It is then rolled and compacted shortly after being applied before it cools.
Asphalt & Bitumen Used Together
Asphalt has a smooth, stone-free surface finish and will generally cost more than bitumen due to the extra cost of materials, labour, and machinery required. Some projects are able to make use of both asphalt and bitumen. Asphalt may be used around the house, while a bitumen seal can be used if a long driveway is present.
